Govt notifies appointment of Mohammad Yaqoob Mir as Chief Justice of Meghalaya HC

The Central Government has notified the appointment of Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.

A notification issued today states,

“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir, Judge of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”

Justice Yaqoob Mir did his LLB from Kashmir University, after which he practiced as an advocate between 1981 to 1993. He was appointed as a District and Sessions Judge in 1993.

In 2007, he was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. He was made a permanent judge of the Court in October 2009. He has previously served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in 2015.

The Collegium had recommended Justice Yaqoob Mir for the post last month keeping in mind that there had not been a Chief Justice originally from the Jammu and Kashmir High Court for quite some time. 

The recommendation was also made considering that the Meghalaya High Court has been functioning with just one judge, as against a sanctioned strength of four, since the retirement of Justice Tarun Agarwala, on March 3, 2018.

Following Justice Agarwal’s retirement, Justice Ranjan Sen had been appointed as Acting Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
