The Central government has notified the transfer of Justice Amit Rawal from the Punjab and Haryana High Court to the Kerala High Court.

As per the notification issued by the Central Government today, Justice Rawal is expected to take charge of his new post as Kerala High Court judge by November 13.

The notification states,

“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Amit Rawal, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, as a Judge of the Kerala High Court and to direct him to assume charge of his office in the Kerala High Court on or before 13th November, 2019.”

The transfer has been notified pursuant to a Collegium recommendation made in August this year. Whereas Justice Rawal had made a request to reconsider the transfer, the Collegium declined to accede to the request. Consequently, the Collegium reiterated its proposal to transfer Justice Rawal to Kerala on September 3 as well.

Born in 1963, Justice Rawal went on to obtain his law degree from from the Panjab university in 1986. He enrolled as a member of the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council. During his years of legal practice, Justice Rawal dealt with civil, property, and criminal matters.

He was designated a Senior Advocate in May 2012. Prior to becoming a judge, he also briefly served as an Additional Advocate General. In September 2014, he was appointed a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
