Anil Ambani case: Court dismisses bail application of Court Master Tapan Chakraborty

Shruti Mahajan

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at Patiala House Court today dismissed the bail application filed by former Court Master at the Supreme Court, Tapan Chakraborty, who was accused of tampering with an order of Supreme Court.

The bail, which was sought on medical grounds, was dismissed by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Manish Khurana, who noted that the claim of ailment has not been verified.

The Court has now remanded Chakraborty to judicial custody.

The second accused in the case, stenographer Manav Sharma, was remanded to judicial custody during the previous hearing.

Former court masters Manav Sharma and Tapan Chakaraborty were arrested by the Delhi Crime Branch earlier this month for allegedly tampering with a Supreme Court order dated January 7. The order was passed in the contempt plea filed by Ericsson against Anil Ambani and Reliance Communications.

The Court had issued notice to Anil Ambani, seeking his personal appearance. However, when the order was uploaded on the website it read:

“personal appearance of the alleged contemnor(s) dispensed with.”

This had been brought to the Court’s notice by counsel for Ericsson, and a corrected order was subsequently uploaded on the website on January 10.

After a preliminary inquiry, it was found that the omission of the word “not” in the order was not accidental.

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi later passed an order on the administrative side, dismissing the two employees.

After their arrest, the two former Court Masters were remanded to 7-day police custody on April 8. On April 15, the police custody of Chakraborty was extended by three days, while Sharma was remanded to judicial custody.
