Condolences pour in following untimely death of Senior Advocate Yashank Adhyaru

Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court, Yashank Adhyaru passed away yesterday at the age of 56 years, following hospitalisation due to breathing issues. He is survived by his son, Kushank Adhyaru.

Following initial training with Kirtikant Nanavati of the Gujarat High Court, Yashank Adhyaru was invited to join the chambers of Kapil Sibal at Delhi.

During the course of his career spanning three decades, he has worked and represented various government authorities and private clients and has also been appointed amicus curaie in several matters.

Following the news of his passing, condolences have poured in from several ranks.

Senior Advocate Nanju Ganapathy said.

“Yashank Andhyaru was aware of a lot of things. He was a tennis player and a movie buff. You could talk on any topic and he would be aware. I think because he was conscious of his short height, he would reach out for higher knowledge. He represented the government in a lot of cases and was a confident lawyer.”

Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave said,

“Mr Yashank Adhyaru Sr. Advocate passed away at rather young age fighting multiple challenges. He was hospitalised for last over four weeks due to serious breathing issues on account of severe chest infection.

He was a very able and dedicated lawyer with over thirty years practice starting from the Gujarat High Court in Ahmedabad and then for last two decades in the Supreme Court. He worked in the chamber of Mr. Kapil Sibal for few years, who in fact encouraged him to shift to Delhi from Ahmedabad.

He appeared for the Union of India regularly especially in tax matters and defended public cause with great clarity, ability,  competence and sincerity. Most of all he fought cases fearlessly but respectfully. Number of judgments reported in various legal journals bear testimony to his contribution to the development of law. As Amicus Curiae in the Salt Workers case, he did a splendid job for securing their rights.

In his death Bar has lost not just a very good lawyer but a very good human being. He worked tirelessly for the SC Housing Society as first Chairman of the Apartment Owners Committee at request of the SCBA and did a fine job in shaping its future in a healthy direction.

His death points to uncertainties of life and particularly the demands of present day life and of the profession.

I join all who knew him personally in the Bar at the Supreme Court in mourning his untimely death and offer condolences to his son Kushank Adhyaru, a distinguished officer of the Indian Air Force, as also Pray to Almighty that His Soul may Rest in Eternal Peace.“

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal said that the death marked a personal loss,

“Mr Yashank Adhyaru was a fabulous human being and it is a personal loss for me. He never had an unkind word for anyone and was one of God’s own meṅ. I was the one who requested him to shift from Ahmedabad to Delhi and he spent some time in my chambers. He was God’s person and its my personal loss.”

“He was a pocket dynamite, well versed in civil, criminal and constitutional and tax law and was very effective in the court,” remarked Advocate Deepak Nargolkar. “[He] Did not get pressurised by the comments of the judges.”

Advocate Manushi Desai, practicing in the Gujarat High Court recounted,

“Mr. Yashank Adhvaryu was extremely kind in my intial years as a law student and always encouraged gaining practical experience through internships including with top law firms.

He was a close friend of my fathers and his family treated me as a daughter when i studied in Delhi. I remember him loving Gujarati snacks including dry patras and always ready to discuss everything from movies to law. His passing away is unfortunate and my condolences rest with his family.“
