Two Additional Judges of the Gauhati High Court made Permanent Judges [Read Notification]

The Central Government has cleared the appointment of two additional judges of the Gauhati High Court as permanent judges of the High Court.

The two additional judges who have now been made permanent judges of the High Court are Justices Hitesh Kumar Sarma and Mir Alfaz Ali.

A notification issued to this effect states,

In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint (i) Shri Justice Hitesh Kumar Sarma, and (11) Shri Justice Mir Alfaz Ali, Additional Judges of the Gauhati High Court, to be Judges of the Gauhati High Court with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective office.

Justice Hitesh Kumar Sarma obtained his law degree from the JB Law College, Gauhati in 1985. He enrolled with the Barpeta District Bar. He went on to join the Assam Judicial Service. Prior to being elevated as a High Court judge, Justice Kumar has served as Chief Judicial Magistrate, Additional District and Sessions Judge, Registrar (Judicial, Administrative and Vigilance sides) of the Gauhati High Court, District Judge and District and Sessions Judges. He went on to become the Registrar General of the High Court twice. He was serving as the Registrar General until his elevation in 2017.

Justice Mir Alfaz Ali obtained his law degree from Gauhati University. He enrolled with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura in 1985. Following about four years of legal practice, he joined the Assam Judicial Service in June 1989. Prior to his elevation as a High Court judge, Justice Ali has served as District and Sessions Judge, a member of the MACT, Presiding Officer of the State Transport Appellate Tribunal, Member Secretary of the Assam State Legal Services Authority, Director of the Assam Judicial Academy and the Registrar (Judicial and Vigilance sides) of the Gauhati High Court. 

Both judges were appointed as additional judges of the High Court in May 2017. They were recommended for being made permanent judges by the Supreme Court Collegium earlier this month.
