Transform 2019: International Conference on Transgender Rights and the Law

The Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR) will be hosting the third edition of the International Conference on Transgender Rights and Law, Transformon September 13-14. The event will be hosted between 9 am and 5 pm at the Bangalore International Centre.

Transform is the first conference in India on transgender rights. The aim of the conference aim is to bring together academics, activists, lawyers and members of the transgender community to push new boundaries for transformation of the law and for a better understanding of transgender equality in India.

On the significance of this year’s edition, CLPR emphasises that it is important to review what steps have been taken in moving towards the actual realisation of equality and fundamental rights for trans and intersex persons.

In September 2018, the Indian Supreme Court passed the landmark verdict in Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India which decriminalised same sex relations between consenting adults. This momentum was followed by the Madras High Court recognising the right to marry for transgender persons.

As we near the first anniversary of Navtej Johar, it is time to examine what steps are to be taken to move forward from decriminalisation, to the actual realisation of equality and all fundamental rights for trans and intersex persons in their everyday life. This would include the right to legal identity, equal opportunities and non-discrimination in employment, access to housing, equality in education, the right to marry, freedom from domestic violence and criminal law reform to recognize sexual violence. TransForm 2019 will focus on all these themes and aims to chart the way forward in a post-Section 377 world and what it means for achieving transgender equality.”
