Tis Hazari. Violence: Co-ordination Committee suspends strike, Advocates to resume work from tomorrow

In view of the Delhi High Court order extending interim protection from any coercive action to the two suspended Delhi Police ASIs in connection with the three FIRs registered against them after the Tis Hazari violence, the Co-ordination Committee of all the Bar Associations in Delhi has resolved to suspend their strike from November 16..The resolution was passed after an urgent meeting of the Co-ordination Committee was held at the Patiala House Court Complex today. The Committee also resolved to take the views of the Bar before chalking out its future course of action..Speaking to Bar & Bench, Chairman of the Coordination Committee Mahavir Sharma said,.“We respect the order of Hon’ble High Court so the abstinence from work is suspended, work is to be resumed from Saturday. We thank all the members for cooperation. Our fight for Advocates Protection Act will continue..We are not safe in court premises, the police persons are given special training to deal with such situations as happened in Tis Hazari on 02/11/19. If police officials commit such heinous offence then the gravity of offence increases.”.A scuffle had broken out between lawyers and police personnel at Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court Complex on November 2 after an argument between a lawyer and the police over parking. The altercation soon escalated and resulted in serious violence in the Court Complex; a lawyer was shot in the ensuing melee..The Delhi High Court Court soon took suo motu cognizance of the matter and ordered a judicial inquiry headed by Justice (retd.) SP Garg into the Tis Hazari violence. While doing so, it also granted protection from coercive action against the lawyers in connection with the cross-FIRs registered against them by Delhi Police..Following the incident, lawyers across the district courts in the city have been abstaining from work since November 4. The main demand behind the strike is to the arrest of the guilty Delhi Police personnel who were involved in the scuffle.
