The Front Benchers? Four Campus Law Centre classmates are now Supreme Court judges

The strength of the Supreme Court is set to rise to 34 with the swearing in of four new judges on September 23.  Two of the four judges slated to be elevated  – Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Hrishikesh Roy – are graduates of the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University.

One interesting consequence of this would be that the Supreme Court of India will now have four classmates from law college adorning the Bench at the same time.

The four judges are Justices DY Chandrachud, Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Hrishikesh Roy and S Ravindra Bhat.

All these four judges graduated from Campus Law Centre in 1982.

Justice DY Chandrachud was born in 1959. After graduating in 1982, he did his LL.M. from Harvard in 1983. He was appointed additional judge of the Bombay High Court on March 29, 2000 and was made Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court on October 31, 2013.

He was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 13, 2016.

Justice Bhat, who was born in 1958, graduated in law from Campus Law Centre in 1982. He enrolled with Delhi Bar Council the same year. He practised before the Delhi High Court, Supreme Court, and other judicial fora. He was appointed an Additional Judge of Delhi High Court in 2004 and was made permanent judge in 2006.

Justice Roy was born in 1960. He was appointed additional judge of Gauhati High Court in 2006 and was made permanent judge in 2008. Justice Roy was then transferred from the Gauhati High Court to the Kerala High Court, where he served as Acting Chief Justice from May 30, 2018. He was made Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court in August 2018.

Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul joined the Bar in 1982 and was elevated as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2001. He became Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in June, 2013, before being transferred to the Madras High Court as its Chief Justice in July 2014. He was appointed as a Supreme Court judge on February 17, 2017.
