Sexual Harassment at the Supreme Court of India: An Introduction

By Pur-suit

The #MeToo movement that rocked the world after the Harvey Weinstein scandal broke out in the US, has well and truly arrived in India. Things were set in motion last year when law student Raya Sarkar called out sexual predators in academia by compiling a crowd-sourced list of names of abusers/harassers.

After a brief lull in the storm, the #MeToo movement resurfaced after actor Tanushree Datta named prominent Bollywood actor Nana Patekar and Director Vivek Agnihotri for sexual harassment on film sets.

Since then, a number of women in various fields including journalism and the music and film industry have disclosed their stories of sexual harassment by some big names like Union Minister and journalist MJ Akbar, actor Alok Nath, Film Director Subhash Ghai etc.

But what is the state of affairs in the legal profession?

The situation in the Indian Courts and the legal fraternity is something that is rarely spoken about. Needless to say, the courts, or the Temples of Justice as they are often referred to, are not free of instances of sexual harassment.

In this series, we attempt to bring out stories of sexual harassment which lawyers, journalists and staff working at the Supreme Court have had to face inside the campus of those hallowed grounds.

Pur-suit will bring you exclusive stories from the Indian legal world.
