Subramanian Swamy challenges constitutionality of criminal defamation; Supreme Court issues notice

In an Article 32 petition, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has challenged the Constitutional vires of criminal provisions pertaining to defamation in the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). The challenge is based on the ground that the provisions violate the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression under Article 19 (1) (a) of the Constitution.
