Student protest continues at NUSRL, Talks with High Court judges bear little fruit

Students at National University for Study and Research in Law (NUSRL) Ranchi continue to protest the state of affairs at the law school for the third consecutive day, even as judges of the Jharkhand High Court arrived on campus to take stock of the situation.

Justices Aparesh Kumar Singh, S Chandrashekhar and Rajesh Shankar visited the NUSRL campus along with Jharkhand Judicial Academy Director Gautam Chaudhary yesterday morning. However, it has emerged that the visit bore little fruit in terms of reaching an understanding.

The University has been on lockdown since yesterday, with students defying the authorities’ directions to abstain from protesting. Some students have even been on a hunger strike for the last two days.

The list of demands include an overhaul of the administration, starting with the ouster of Vice-Chancellor BC Nirmal, an audit of the NUSRL’s finances, state government’s intervention to ease the University’s debt of Rs. 42 crore to the CPWD authorities, and more.

Today, police forces were deployed outside the locked gates.

On a more positive note, the protests seemed to have galvanised the student community. Senior students are taking classes for their juniors so that they don’t suffer as a result of the strike.

In turn, the junior students found the time to congratulate their seniors who have been placed in law firms.
