The 13th edition of India’s best rock festival-competition kicked off on Friday with over 50 bands in the fray. Rated as India’s best rock festival by the Rock Street Journal, Strawberry Fields was initiated to patronize original and talented bands in India. Bands such as Pin Drop Violence, Thermal and a Quarter, Motherjane, Junkyard Groove and Bhayanak Maut, made their mark at Strawberry Fields and went on to record albums..12 years ago Rahul Cherian, a IV year student and a few of his friends at National Law School of India University went about organizing Woodstock inspired ‘Lawcommotion’, their first music festival-competition. That is what ‘strawberry Fields’ was known as for the first four years..The 13th edition of India’s best rock festival-competition kicked off on Friday with over 50 bands in the fray. Our vision was that we only wanted to promote creativity, and have the biggest and the best independent music festival in India,” says Cherian, the founding partner at IndoJuris Law Offices in Chennai. They sure seem to have succeeded. Bands such as Pin Drop Violence, Thermal and a Quarter, Motherjane, Junkyard Groove and Bhayanak Maut, made their mark at Strawberry Fields and went on to record albums..Bands will be judged on their stage presence, originality, tightness, instruments and overall impression the fest starts today. The preliminaries extend till tomorrow evening and the five finalist bands will perform on Sunday 5 pm onwards..Backed by Reynolds, a retail store for music equipment, IP specialist LPO, CPA Global and Times of India, Strawberry Fields have veteran Rock-n’-Roll band, Parikrama headlining on Sunday. Opening their act is Bangalore based death metal band, Inner Sanctum..After years of being part of the team that organised Strawberry Fields, NLSIU alumnus and guitarist John Daniel was in the panel of judges after graduation for Strawberry Fields between 2005 and 2007. However for 2009, his band ‘Crazy Zeus and the Grasshoppers’, are looking to win the award for the Best Band in the Semi-Pro category..“Competing in Strawberry Fields is a dream come true. It will enable me to experience Strawberry Fields in the only way, and possibly the best way I haven’t so far,” he told Bar & Bench..The bands have a nominal entry fee and the audience don’t have to pay to enter, and good music is assured. The show couldn’t get better.
