A Special Court in Delhi presided by Judge OP Saini today adjourned further hearing in the Aircel Maxis case sine die..Judge Saini directed the Investigating Agencies – the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), to revive the case once the investigation is complete..The order was passed by the Court after the Agencies sought an adjournment of six weeks on the ground that response to the Letters Rogatory (LRs) was awaited. The Judge thus added that the Agencies may approach the Court once they receive the LRs from foreign countries..While adjourning the case indefinitely, the Court observed that the Agencies had been taking repeated adjournments in the case..Both the CBI and the ED had filed a chargesheet against former Union Minister, P Chidambaram, his son Karti Chidambaram and others in the case in July 2018. In spite of sanction from the Central Government, the cognizance on the chargesheet is still pending due to repeated adjournments..The Court had yesterday granted anticipatory bail to P Chidambaram and Karti Chidambaram in the Aircel Maxis case..The case pertains to the alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approvals granted to the Aircel-Maxis deal at the time when P Chidambaram was Union Finance Minister. It is prosecution’s case that P Chidambaram, who was the Union Finance Minister at the time when the ₹3,500 crore Aircel-Maxis deal went through, and his son Karti received certain kickbacks to ensure FIPB clearance for the said deal..The CBI and the ED were represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
