Chief Justice of India, Justice JS Khehar has told the office bearers of the Supreme Court bar Association (SCBA) that he will talk to Justice Ranjan Gogoi to see if the Court can resume the process of designating lawyers as Senior Advocates..Senior designations have, currently, been put on hold by the Supreme Court, since a petition filed by Senior Advocate Indira Jaising, challenging the process for designating advocates as Seniors, is pending before the Supreme Court..According to a note sent by SCBA President, RS Suri to the members of the SCBA,.“Hon’ble Chief Justice also informed that he would talk to Hon’ble Justice Gogoi and see if full court meeting can take place for designation of seniors. He agreed to the same after being appraised that Supreme Court lawyers who deserve to be designated are facing a handicap in light of High Courts continuing to designate seniors.”.It was the Supreme Court Bench presided by Justice Ranjan Gogoi that had referred Jaising’s petition to a larger Bench after holding that the “issue is of vital importance”. Regarding making designations in the interim during the pendency of the case, the same Bench had said that it is leaving the same to the discretion of High Courts and the Supreme Court..While High Courts including Delhi and Gujarat High Courts had made certain designations, the Supreme Court had refrained from doing so till now.
