Senior Advocate P Wilson was elected unopposed as a member of the Rajya Sabha yesterday, along with five others. He was nominated for the post by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party earlier this month..In a press release made yesterday, Wilson said that he was honoured to be appointed to the post. The statement reads,.“I am honoured to have been chosen by Thalaivar Thalapathy as one of the DMK representatives to the Rajya Sabha..I was drawn to the DMK and its values from my student days. After my enrolment as an advocate, I have been appearing for the DMK before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India and Hon’ble Madras High Court since 1994…I owe a great debt of gratitude to the colossal, departed leader of all Tamils, Muthamizh Arignar Thalaivar Kalaignar who lives on in our hearts. I bow to his memory and will continue to seek his blessings….… I pledge to fight for the people of Tamil Nadu, to protect our rights, the rights of the State, in accordance with the Dravidian ideology and principles, and to uphold the Constitutional values.”.P Wilson is a former Additional Solicitor General of India (ASG). He served as ASG between August 2012 and May 2014. Earlier, he has also served as an Additional Advocate General (AAG) for Tamil Nadu between August 2008 and May 2011..Following his enrolment in 1989, he joined the chambers of former Tamil Nadu Advocate General, KV Venkatapathi. After he set up independent practice, he went on to serve as the Standing Counsel for various state entities including the Chennai Corporation, the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation and the State Transport Corporation..In 2005, he was appointed Senior Central Government Standing Counsel in the Madras High Court, following which he was appointed the Special Government Pleader. He was designated a senior advocate in 2009, a year after he was appointed AAG for Tamil Nadu. He resigned from the post of AAG in 2011 along with other law officers. In 2014, he resigned from the post of ASG following a change in the Union Government..Wilson has appeared for various leaders of the DMK party, in several cases including for party chief MK Stalin and others including Kanimozhi, Dayanidhi Maran and Kalanidhi Maran..Among the recent high-profile cases that Wilson has appeared in was a case concerning the burial of late Chief of the DMK party, M Karunanidhi. In August last year, the ruling AIADMK-led government initially declined permission for the burial of the late DMK Chief at the historic Marina Beach memorial grounds alongside CN Annadurai, revered as a pioneer in Dravidian politics in Tamil Nadu and viewed as Karunanidhi’s mentor..However, following impassioned arguments lead by Wilson, a Division Bench of the Madras High Court allowed DMK’s petition challenging the state’s refusal to allow Karunanidhi’s burial at Marina. Wilson had argued that the state’s refusal to allow Karunanidhi’s burial at the ground conventionally marked for Dravidian leaders had entailed in a violation of his right to a decent burial under Article 21, given his stature as a “tall leader” of the Dravidian movement..Wilson was one among three nominated for the seat by the DMK, the other two being the General Secretary of the party’s Labour Progressive Federation, K Shanmugam and Vaiko, leader of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) party..The other three Rajya Saha seats for Tamil Nadu were filled by nominees of the All India Anna Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party, Mohammad John and N Chandrasekaran along with Anbumani Ramadoss of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), AIADMK’s alliance partner.
