186 cases of the 1984 Sikh riots matter will be re-investigated..The Supreme Court today decided to constitute a fresh three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to re-investigate 186 cases pertaining to 1984 sikh riots..A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra along with Justices DY Chandrachud and AM Khanwilkar passed the order in a plea seeking reopening and re-investigating the anti-sikh riots cases..Senior Advocate HS Phoolka represented the petitioner..The decision to form SIT was based on the report submitted by the supervisory committee of Justices KS Radhakrishnan and JM Panchal, set up by the Supreme Court. The report stated that 186 out of 293 cases were halted without carrying out proper investigation..The Bench after perusal of the supervisory committee report observed that it is imperative to constitute a fresh SIT to probe into the pending cases..The Bench has also sought the assistance of ASG Pinky Anand to suggest names of persons for the new SIT, which would be headed by a former High Court Judge and include a former IPS officer and one serving IPS officer based out of Delhi..The matter will now be heard tomorrow when the Center will submit the names of the SIT members.
