Supreme Court judges should not project a fractured face, Justice Amitava Roy

Justice Amitava Roy served his last working day at the Supreme Court today. Speaking at the farewell function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association, Roy J. was quite vocal about various developments surrounding the Bench and the Bar including the recent rift between Supreme Court judges..He said that the people have trust in the Supreme Court because of the credibility that the institution has. Hence, the judges should not project a fractured face and every judge must demonstrate that the court is one single unit..“It is because of the credibility this institution enjoys people have trust. I feel that we cannot project a fractured face to anyone Each of my colleague is an excellent Judge but it is necessary to be together..An individual note can exist but when combined it becomes melody. We must demonstrate that we are one composite unit, and our goal is one.”.Roy also batted for a mechanism to train lawyers to hone their skills..“I feel there should be a mechanism to train lawyers. For eg. Drafting, Court Crafts, ethics, etiquettes etc. This will help hone skills. I don’t know this may happen someday. It has been crossing my mind for quite a while.”.Roy J. was elevated to the Supreme Court on Februart 27, 2015. He will retire on March 1, 2018. Since the court closes for Holi vacation today and re-opens on March 5, today is his last working day.
