Breaking: SC agrees to hear matter concerning violent incidents at JMU and AMU tomorrow, if rioting stops

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear matters concerning violent incidents at Jamia Milia Islamia University and Aligarh Muslim University on Tuesday provided the rioting stops immediately..Senior Advocate Indira Jaising today requested the Court to take suo moto cognizance of the “violence that is unleashed” on the students, including law students, across the country. Jaising said,.“When the Police and lawyers had clashed in Delhi, the Delhi High Court had taken suo moto cognizance. Request the Supreme Court now to take suo moto notice of the violation of the human rights of the students.”.Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves also apprised the Court of the situation of the students who sustained injuries and were detained..CJI SA Bobde with Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant told Senior Advocates Indira Jaising and Colin Gonsalves that the Court will hear and decide the matter with a cool mind, not in an atmosphere of rioting. CJI Bobde said,.“We first want the rioting to stop. We have enough experience of knowing how rioting takes place, we know what the rights are. Just because people are throwing stones outside, it is not the reason for the Court to decide Let the rioting stop first..Jaising informed the Court that the students across the nation were victims of violence that was unleashed on them by the Police. Gonsalves told the Court that the students who were detained yesterday had sustained injuries and were not given medical assistance, while many of them even had broken bones..The students were constrained to go and hide in toilets and hostel rooms on account of the Police action. The lawyers told the Court that Police personnel had entered into the university library without authorization..CJI Bobde said that the Court is not saying who is wrong or who is right at this stage but the rioting needs to stop, regardless of which quarters it is coming from.. CJI Bobde added,.“Public property is destroyed Buses are being burnt… It doesn’t matter by whom. We will decide in a cool frame of mind. We will hear the matter and see what can be done.
