The whistle-blower in the ongoing infighting in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Sathish Sana has approached the Supreme Court seeking Police protection..Sana whose statement formed the basis for the CBI FIR filed against the agency’s Special Director Rakesh Asthana, has prayed for Hyderabad Police to provide adequate protection to him while the matter is being probed fearing threat to his life and liberty..Sana had alleged that Asthana received a bribe of Rs 2 Crore in exchange for a clean chit to Sana in an investigation in the case relating to meat trader Moin Qureshi. It was this allegation made by Sana that led to the registration of the FIR against Asthana by the CBI..Shortly after the FIR was registered, CBI headquarters was raided and a couple of arrests were made pursuant to the FIR. Thereafter, the Centre sent both the Director and the Special Director of the CBI on leave. The investigating team probing the allegations of bribery against Asthana was also overhauled..Sana was summoned for questioning by the new Investigating Officer on October 26 by way of a notice which was pasted at the door of his residence in Hyderabad. Fearing threat to his life, Sana has now sought police protection. He has also asked for his interrogation to be carried out under the supervision of the retired Judge of the Supreme Court AK Patnaik J., who will also be monitoring the inquiry against Alok Verma. Sana’s applications states,.“It is submitted that the present applicant fears that he will be intimidated and threatened to withdraw/modify his statements already made. In case the CBI is permitted to question him without supervision, the Applicant also perceives an imminent threat to his life and personal liberty.”.In his application, filed through Advocate K Parameshwar, Sana has also given an undertaking to co-operate in the investigation fully and also assured that he is not a flight risk. Sana has also, according to his application, written to Justice (retd) Patnaik expressing his willingness to give his statements under his supervision..He has, therefore, sought a stay on the notice of October 26 summoning him to attend proceedings before the CBI..On October 23, the Centre had passed an executive order divesting CBI Director Alok Verma of his powers and sending him on a leave. Verma had challenged this order before the Supreme Court and in an order passed by the Apex Court on Friday, October 26, the CVC was directed to conduct an inquiry in the allegations against Verma..This inquiry was directed to be concluded within two weeks and to be monitored by the Retired Judge of the Supreme Court AK Patnaik.
