Government notifies appointment of Rumi Kumari Phukan J. as Permanent Judge of Gauhati HC [Read Notification]

The Central Government has notified the appointment of additional judge, Rumi Kumari Phukan as a permanent judge of the Gauhati High Court.

A notification issued to this effect states,

“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Smt. Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan, Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court, to be a Judge of the Gauhati High Court with effect from the date she assumes charge of her office.

The Supreme Court Collegium had made a recommendation to this effect last month. The Collegium had found Justice Phukan to be suitable after conferring with colleagues familiar with the affairs of the High Court, as well as examining the material on record.

Justice Phukan obtained her law degree from the Jorhat Law College in 1987, following which she obtained a B.Ed degree from the Post Graduate Training College, Jorhat. She enrolled in the Bar Council of Assam in 1987 and practised at the Jorhat District Court for a year.

In 1988, she joined the Assam Judicial Service. She has worked in different capacities including as a Principal Judge at the Family Court, Guwahati, Registrar, Judicial, Registrar Administration and Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court.

Prior to her elevation to the High Court, she was serving as a District and Sessions Judge. She was elevated to the Gauhati High Court as an additional judge in January 2015.
