RMLNLU protests put on hold, authorities given time to comply with demands

Protests at Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University (RMLNLU) Lucknow have been suspended a week after the students went up in arms against the state of affairs at the University.

The students have been headstrong in their bid to change things at the University, ever since allegations of sexual harassment on the part of senior officials came to light. An inquiry into these incidents is already underway.

Classes resumed yesterday as the students agreed to give the administration time to meet their demands. The authorities have acquiesced to the following demands made by students:

  • The Joint Registrar and Deputy Registrar will be on leave and will not be allowed to enter the admin block of the University pending the inquiry.
  • The Vice-Chancellor shall write a letter to the Chief Justice of India asking him to launch an inquiry into various issues
  • An Academic Council meeting shall take place within 15 days
  • The VC shall request the Chief Minister to convene a General Council meeting within 15 days
  • A Placement Officer shall be appointed by the VC

However, judging from what has happened in the past, the students are wary of dropping the protest altogether. The truce, they say, is a temporary measure.

As one student puts it,

“All are demands have been accepted but because they all are assurances, we can call for continuation of protest if assurances don’t turn into implementations. The college administration has asked for some time for putting into actions all are demands. We are just giving them time.”
