RK Anand files affidavit before Supreme Court Undertakes to donate Rs21 lakh to BCI and work pro bono for one year

RK Anand, the former senior counsel, has filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court in the course of his appeal against the Delhi High Court’s August 2008 decision, inter alia, to strip him of his senior advocate designation. As per the affidavit, Anand has agreed to not only donate Rs.21 lakh to the Bar Council of India (BCI) for the establishment of a computer centre or a library, but he has also agreed to provide pro bono legal services to the “poor and needy persons”..On July 29, 2009 the Supreme Court had not only upheld the decision of the Delhi High Court but had also sought to enhance the punishment meted out to Anand under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971. On September 17, 2012, TOI reported that a Bench of Justices G S Singhvi, Aftab Alam and C K Prasad had offered Anand the option of “doing penance” by rendering free legal services or face the punishment of imprisonment for six months. In addition, the Court had directed Anand to donate a sum of Rs.21 lakh to the BCI towards the development of a law institute in the country..Accepting the conditions laid down by the Court, Anand has now filed the affidavit wherein he states that he has decided to “donate a sum of Rs. 21 lakh” to the BCI for the establishment of a “Computer Centre/Library” in any law institute as per the directions of the BCI..Anand also undertakes to offer his legal services free of cost, for a period of one year, in the form of “legal aid to the poor and needy persons” of the country.
