Prof Dr S Shantha Kumar appointed the Director of GNLU

Prof Dr S Shantha Kumar has been appointed the next Director of the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Ahmedabad.

The General Council headed by Justice DY Chandrachud approved the decision to appoint Dr Shantha Kumar to the post for a five-year term, following a meeting held last Friday.

Dr Shantha Kumar will succeed Dr Bimal N Patel whose 10-year term as GNLU Director ended in last November. After his term ended, he was asked to continue in office until his successor was appointed.

As per a statement issued to Bar & Bench, the General Council has placed on record its appreciation for the contributions by Dr BN Patel to the growth of GNLU over last 10 years. Law Minister, Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, profusely thanked Dr Bimal Patel on behalf of the Government of Gujarat saying that “under the leadership of Dr Patel, GNLU has become a preferred destination for legal studies, interdisciplinary research and training in the country.”

Dr BN Patel also congratulated Dr Shantha Kumar on his new appointment. Dr Shantha Kumar is expected to take charge as the next Director of GNLU in July.

Prof Dr S Shantha Kumar currently serves as the Pro Vice-Chancellor & Dean, School of Law of GD Goenka University. Prior to this, he has served as Dean, Faculty of Law at SGT University, Gurgaon; Director of ITM Law School, ITM University, Gurgaon; Associate Professor of Law and Controller of Examinations at Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU), Raipur; Senior Lecturer at Government, Law College, Madurai; and Senior Lecturer at Government Law College, Chennai.

Before joining the legal academia he had practised at the Madras High Court for seven years. He is an alumnus of Madras University where he obtained his graduation, post-graduation and doctorate degree in law. His areas of specialization are Environmental Law, Human Rights Law, International Law, and Constitutional Law.

He has authored three books on Environmental Law and two books on Human Rights Law. He has published a number of research articles on contemporary legal issues in various reputed national and international journals and edited volumes. He has also presented papers and delivered keynote addresses in many national and international conferences in India and abroad.

He is also an active member of the International Association of Law Schools, USA. He has been awarded the “Environmental Law Champions Development Award” by the Asian Development Bank, Philippines.
