Jagisha Arora, wife of journalist Prashant Kanojia has filed a Habeas Corpus petition in the Supreme Court challenging Kanojia’s arrest by the Uttar Pradesh Police
Prashant Kanojia who had posted a tweet about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was picked up by the Uttar Pradesh Police on Saturday from Delhi.
He was formally arrested in Lucknow. Kanojia has been charged with offences under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code as well as Section 67 of the Information Technology Act. According to the press note issued by the UP Police, the police acted suo motu in this case.
Challenging the arrest, Kanojia’s wife has now moved the Supreme Court seeking issuance of the writ of Habeas Corpus.
The matter was mentioned by Counsel Nitya Ramakrishna before the Vacation Bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and Ajay Rastogi.
The Court has agreed to hear the matter on Tuesday, June 11.
