A scuffle broke out between lawyers and police personnel at Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court Complex earlier today, ANI has reported..The trigger behind the violence is said to be an argument between the lawyers and police over parking issues in the Tis Hazari premises..As per the report, there was also an incident of firing by the Delhi Police which resulted in one lawyer being injured. The lawyer has been admitted to St Stephen’s Hospital, Tis Hazari, Delhi..As per the statement issued by the Delhi Police, 20 police officials including one Addl DCP and 2 SHOs sustained injuries. In the fire, 12 private motorcycles, 1 QRT gipsy of police & 8 jail vans outside the lock-up were damaged, it is informed..The statement further informs that complaints from both sides have been registered and an SIT of the crime branch would investigate the cases..The Delhi Police has also clarified that gunshots were fired in the air for the safety of under trial prisoners and in self-defence after a group of lawyers stormed the police lockup. The circumstances of the gunshot injury to the lawyer is also being investigated with the help of the CFSL team..The evening witnessed heavy deployment of Delhi Police personnel inside the Tis Hazari Court Complex as the situation remained tense..The Delhi Police Traffic Police also issued an alert with respect to the traffic at the Tis Hazari Court due to demonstration..Meanwhile, Chairman of the Bar Council of Delhi, Advocate KC Mittal has issued a statement condemning the attack..“We strongly condemn the brutal unprovoked attack on lawyers by police at Tis Hazari Courts. One lawyer is critical. A young lawyer was beaten up in lockup which shows high-handedness of police. They should be dismissed and prosecuted. We stand with Delhi lawyers.”.Speaking to Bar & Bench, Mittal added that he has spoken to the Chief Secretary, Delhi Government about the incident and urged him to take immediate action..“The incident of lathi-charge by the Police personnel is absolutely unacceptable and intolerable. The police officer who shot the lawyer should be arrested. “, he said..The Bar Council of India has also issued a statement on the “brutal action” of the police in Tis Hazari Court and has urged the lawyers to maintain peace..The release reads,.“The brutal action of police in Tis Hazari Court against Advocates is completely beyond the tolerance of the Bar. We demand from the higher police officials of Delhi Police to immediately arrest the culprits, put them under suspension failing which the situation will go beyond the control of the Government. The Bar Council of India strongly condemns this action of the police as a result of which lawyers have been seriously injured by the police firing on a petty issue of car-parking. This proves the irresponsible and criminal behaviour of the police..The Bar Council of India is sending its team to take stock of the situation and to decide further course of action. In the meantime, the Chairman, Bar Council of India has appealed to the Advocates to maintain the peace and not to take law in their hands as their representative body itself has taken the issue very seriously..The Chairman, Bar Council of India Manan Kumar Mishra, the Co-Chairman Mr. Ved Prakash Sharma and Chairman of Bar Council of Delhi Mr. K.
