A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking a declaration that the chanting of Jai Shri Ram be declared a fundamental right, reports PTI..According to the report, the matter came up today before a Bench of Chief Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan and Justice Suvra Ghosh. The Bench, however, adjourned the case..The petition has been filed by advocate Partha Ghosh, who has sought Court’s intervention in the alleged penal action initiated against various persons by the State of West Bengal for chanting Jai Shri Ram..The Court adjourned the case for four weeks, while observing that the aggrieved persons are at liberty to take recourse to appropriate legal remedies..The issue has become a contentious one in West Bengal, after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee objected to certain persons shouting Jai Shri Ram when her motorcade was passing through the Bhatpara area of North 24 Parganas district. In a video which surfaced on social media, some men were seen shouting Jai Shri Ram as Banerjee’s motorcade was passing through..An agitated Banerjee was seen coming out of the car and arguing with the persons who had chanted the slogan. She had also asked police officials to take down the names of those persons. According to India Today, Banerjee had accused them of “coming from other States” and “abusing us.”.Subsequently, the police had registered an FIR against “unknown people” for criminal intimidation.
