Pangea3 had been eying a US expansion since its acquisition by Thomson Reuter in November 2010..According to the press release, this move is part of a broader strategy by Thomson Reuters to expand its footprint in the growing legal process outsourcing market. The Dallas location will offer efficiency and savings for its customers..Pangea3 will have lawyers working during US business hours on tasks that, because of logistics or American law, can be difficult to perform outside the country..Co-CEO David Perla in a statement said, “This is an exciting time for Pangea3, and this expansion in the United States only months after our acquisition shows the value of having a major player like Thomson Reuters in your corner”..Bar & Bench spoke with Sanjay Kamlani (pictured), Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Pangea3 on the journey post acquisition, reasons for setting up new office in Dallas, reverse outsourcing and expansion plans..Bar & Bench: How has the journey for Pangea3 been post acquisition by Thomson Reuter?.Sanjay Kamlani: It has been a very productive opportunity for Pangea3 to work in the Thomson Reuter’s family given the extensive legal technology platforms and legal information database platforms. We have been able to leverage these legal platforms and information databases to enhance our services to the clients. There is also an extensive network of experts throughout Thomson Reuters Legal that certainly enhances the company’s growth. So it’s been extremely productive for us, the last six months being a part of Thomson Reuter..Bar & Bench: You have recently set up an on shore facility in Dallas, Texas. What are the reasons for setting up this new office in US?.Sanjay Kamlani: The primary purpose of setting up this facility in the US is to offer our clients a 24×7 service. Historically, we operated during Indian business hours and we worked a professional day with some overlap with US time zone. Now, the Dallas facility will give us full day coverage in US for clients that need to access our teams during US business hours. The other primary reason is that there are certain types of documents or certain types of work that cannot be sent to India. Typically, export control restricted documents, certain types of technologies and other types of documentations that cannot leave the United States. We will be able to work on those documents in the US so that we can continue to serve our clients..Bar & Bench: Any further expansion plans for Pangea3?.Sanjay Kamlani: We continue to grow at a steady pace in India as well. By the end of the year we would expect both our on shore facility as well as our India team size to continue to grow as the company grows. There are about 700 employees in India. Today, they are spread between Mumbai and Delhi offices. We actually have started to have some people in Bangalore and we will expect that location to increase in size this year. The likelihood is that we will start to have people in other locations in India as well..Bar & Bench: Reverse outsourcing – there are reports about outsourcing back to the US. Can you throw some light about the process and how it is happening?.Sanjay Kamlani: One of the areas is electronic discovery work. Typically in US lawyers are often not given permanent jobs to do that work, they are often given only temporary jobs to do that work. They move from place to place as there is work and then they don’t have a job etc. We have been offering permanent employment to those lawyers in the US and we are teaching them our way of how we have been doing electronic discovery in India with process expertise, technology expertise and best practices. So we are hiring American lawyers and teaching them our practice as to how we do electronic discovery..Bar & Bench: Which other countries and outsourcing locations are emerging?.Sanjay Kamlani: I think certainly there are locations in Europe that are emerging. We are certainly seeing Eastern Europe and other near shore locations in Europe that are interesting and one of the benefits can often be the European language capability. That certainly is interesting. Other Asian locations, I don’t think are really that interesting. There is not really any scale in those other countries. You hear about South Africa and you hear about Philippines but the reality is they don’t really have that many lawyers there for it to be a real buyable industry.
