The ban on the film Padmaavat, earlier titled Padmavati, in four states has been challenged in the Supreme Court..The petition filed by Viacom was mentioned today by Advocate Mahesh Agarwal before the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, who agreed to list the matter tomorrow..Back in November last year, the Court had dismissed a petition calling for a ban on the film..The petitioner in that case had sought a stay on release of the feature film on the grounds that Rani Padmavati had been depicted in poor light, and that the same was likely to hurt the sentiments of people..Deepika Padukone, who plays the queen, is shown to be doing the Ghoomar dance, and performing thumkas (hip movements), which has hurt the sentiments of the Rajput community, the petition states..Therefore, the petitioner sought a stay on the release of the film and also prayed for the constitution of a committee of “eminent historians and prominent citizens” to check the historical veracity of the depiction of Rani Padmavati..In another petition calling for a ban on the film filed by advocate ML Sharma, the Court took objection to the fact that persons holding public offices had commented on the release of the film..Both these petitions were dismissed, as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had yet to come to a decision on the film..Later, the CBFC on December 30 gave the green signal for the release of the film, subject to a few cuts and a change in the title to Padmaavat. Despite the CBFC’s conditional clean chit, four states – Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and most recently, Haryana, have imposed a ban on the film, scheduled for release in other states on January 25..Image taken from here.
