P Chidambaram: Fresh petition against CBI custody not listed for hearing in SC, Sibal mentions matter

Senior Counsel Kapil Sibal today mentioned the petition filed on behalf of P Chidambaram challenging the Special Judge’s order granting his remand to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)..At the previous hearing, the Court had agreed to hear the matter today. However, the matter was not listed for hearing today..Justice R Banumathi, who is on the Bench with Justice AS Bopanna, informed Sibal that the Registry needed an order from Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. The two other SLPs challenging the Delhi High Court’s order denying anticipatory bail to Chidambaram will be taken up for hearing today..In the fresh petition, P Chidambaram has assailed two orders of the Special CBI Judge issuing a non-bailable arrest warrant against him and subsequently remanding him to CBI custody. This custody will end today and Chidambaram will be produced before the Special CBI judge at Rouse Avenue Court Complex. The CBI is expected to pray for an extension of the remand..On August 20, the Delhi High Court delivered its judgment rejecting anticipatory bail to P Chidambaram, following which his legal team immediately rushed to the Supreme Court to challenge this order. On August 21, several attempts were made by Chidambaram’s legal team to secure an urgent listing of the case, with his lawyers going back and forth from Justice NV Ramana to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. However, despite these efforts, Chidambaram failed to secure an urgent hearing in the case with the matter eventually being listed for August 23..The CBI arrested Chidambaram shortly after his press briefing, while the petition before the Supreme Court remained pending. Chidambaram was produced before the Special CBI Judge at the Rouse Avenue Court Complex on Thursday, August 22 where he was remanded to CBI custody till Monday, August 26..The Supreme Court granted him interim protection from arrest in the cases filed by the Enforcement Directorate till the next date of hearing..All eyes are on the Rouse Avenue Court Complex, where Chidambaram will be produced later today..Read Order:
