#NUSRL: Protests on hold as Judicial Academy head takes over at helm

The protests at National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL) Ranchi have finally come to a standstill after three days.

After a meeting held yesterday, Vice-Chancellor Dr. BC Nirmal has reportedly been ousted from his post. Director of the Judicial Academy of Jharkhand, Gautam Kumar Choudhary has taken over in the interim.

Choudhary’s first order of business was to conduct a meeting with the students, attended by police officials and an MLA. It is understood that the students have agreed to call off their protests for now, giving the authorities three months to set things right.

The students have been assured of improvements to campus infrastructure, funds from the state government and a financial audit of the University within fifteen days. As a result, classes will resume from today.

The agitation began earlier this week, sparked off by a threat that the University was likely to be dragged to arbitration by the CPWD for the recovery of dues. The students made a list of demands, including an overhaul of the administration, and the ouster of the VC, an audit of NUSRL’s finances, state government’s intervention to ease the University’s debt of Rs. 42 crore to the CPWD authorities, and the setting up of a Review Committee.

A couple of days ago, judges of the Jharkhand High Court arrived on campus to reassure students that their demands would be met.
