While the popularity of law as a career option is definitely on a rise, lower ranked NLUs have shown significant improvement this year. While NLU-J, RML, HNLU and RGNUL surfaced as the biggest gainers this year, there has been a slight but unexpected deterioration in the positions of NUJS and GNLU. Last year the indicators were positive only till GNLU but this year the effect has trickled down. The biggest jump is in 7th and 8th ranked NLUs (HNLU and RML)..To what extent the NLUs have been able to hold their existing rankings? Which are likely to improve and which one to go down in Future?.The table given below indicates the firmness of a NLU at a particular rank. This has been derived from the preferences made by the students for various NLUs..How to read the Table given below.1. Immigration is the number of students who chose this NLU having a rank which could have given a higher ranked NLU. For Example Agniroop had a rank of 20 but chose NUJS..2. Migration is the number of students who chose a lower ranked NLU although could have got this NLU with the secured rank. For Example at rank 122 NUJS was possible but the student preferred NLIU over NUJS. Hence NUJS lost this student..3. Net Impact is nothing but Immigration minus Migration..4. Net Impact % has been calculated with respect to the available seats. This makes the parameter more efficient and unbiased while comparing. The number of seats varies a lot among various NLUs..Observations.1. NLU Jodhpur is the biggest gainer.2. The top two slots seem to be very consistent. NUJS has not been able to create any significant dent..3. NUJS which has been improving constantly has shown stagnation this year..4. NLIU, GNLU and CNLU look shaky at their positions.5. The downfall of NUJS and GNLU is surprising, considering that their placements have been excellent in recent times. .Conclusion.Finally I would like to say that it is good to see the rise in popularity index of almost all the NLUs. This has happened for the first time. Preference list this year was filled up much earlier. Students’ awareness level might have been higher had it been filled up now (online). There were lot of mistakes in the released allotment list. I am thankful to the honourable CLAT committee to get the corrected list on time. I am assuming that this list is correct. Such mistakes every year create a bad image of CLAT and NLUs and parents and students have to suffer.
