NLU Delhi to conduct Justice JS Verma Human Right Advocacy Training and Mock Trial Course [Nov 21-26]

The Centre for Criminology & Victimology of the National Law University Delhi (NLU Delhi) and the Bar Human Rights Committee of England & Wales (BHRC), in collaboration with iProbono is organising a course on Human Rights Advocacy Training and Mock Trial.

The course aims to train students in trial advocacy, handling vulnerable witnesses and in dealing with difficult issues of gender based violence. This project is a continuation of the work of the Justice Verma Committee and its Report on Amendments to the Criminal Law.

Eligibility

Students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th year of the regular 5 year BA/LL.B undergraduate law course as well as final year students of the 3 year post graduate LLB Law Course are eligible to apply.

A maximum number of 25 students will be accepted on a rolling basis. No course fees will be levied from the selected students.

Training and Course Programme

The selected students will be taught by human rights jurists from India in collaboration with barristers from UK-based Doughty (civil liberties and human rights chambers), JUSTICE (a leading human rights NGO based in London. A specialist intermediary will take classes in relation to the topic of vulnerable witnesses.

The training for the course will be conducted by engaging the students in multiple fictitious practical exercises. Such exercises shall focus on  Examination-in-Chief, Cross Examination, Speech Making and various other court formalities.

The course will also include academic and critical seminars on a wide variety of topics such as Law, Power & Fairness, Ethical Challenges when dealing with Vulnerable Witnesses, Inter-sectional Discrimination and the concept of ‘Vulnerability’ in Indian legislation.

A Mock Trial will also be conducted  on the last day of the course i.e,  November 26, 2019. The judges for the event shall be practising lawyers from the Indian Supreme Court and other eminent judges.

It is mandatory for the selected students to attend the course on all days. A certificate will be provided to all the students on the successful completion of the course.

Dates and Venue

The course will run from November 21, 2019 (Thursday) to November 26, 2019 (Tuesday) on a daily basis. The timings will be from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The course will be held at NLU Delhi
