Avantika Thakur a fourth year B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) student from the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore has been selected to participate in a Youth Leadership Program (Program) by the Royal Commonwealth Society in Rwanda..Avantika and her friend started an informal mentoring program at NLSIU to help students who have come from Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe backgrounds to cope with the pressures of the integrated law program. Avantika is a twenty year old who is passionate about Tribal Rights and she wishes to return to her hometown of Lahaul & Spiti in Himachal Pradesh to contribute to the development of the tribal population there..The Youth Leadership Program comprises of a ten-day intensive workshop which will include project visits, film screenings, debates, discussions and a meeting with the President of Rwanda. The Program will provide a chance for the participants to present their ideas to key Commonwealth and Global leaders..Avantika who is thrilled and excited about this opportunity told Bar & Bench that, “Leadership is not about following someone; it’s about learning and leading with the people. I hope to learn, lead and grow with the experience of this program.”.Avantika is one of the 32 participants selected from over five hundred applicants to attend the Program in the capital of Rwanda, Kigali in September. The Youth Leadership Program is done in conjunction with the Rwandan Ministry of Youth, the Commonwealth Secretariat and the United Nations in Rwanda. It is the first major Commonwealth event to take place in Rwanda. The Program will be held between 5th to the 15th September, 2010.
