NLIUs Literary Society releases second issue of online magazine quotSaucequot Focus on non-legal content

The Literary Society (LitSoc) at the National Law Institute University, Bhopal (NLIU) has recently come out with the second issue of its online literary magazine “Sauce”. We spoke to 5th year NLIU student and LitSoc member, Aditi Verghese, about this interesting endeavour..Bar & Bench: First of, what is Sauce?.Aditi Verghese: Sauce is the literary magazine of the National Law Institute University’s Literary Society. The LitSoc is one branch of Jus Cultura, the University’s literary, debating and quizzing cell..Bar & Bench: How did the name come about?.Aditi Verghese: We wanted a name for our magazine which was casual and fun and, at the same time, brought out our intent – to allow students an outlet to write about whatever they wanted; to truly express themselves. Sauce can mean ‘something that adds piquance or zest’. We believe that a literary magazine does just that to life in a law college. Additionally, to be saucy is to be cheeky, impertinent and brazen. We recognise this quality in some of the best writers and artists..Bar & Bench: What has been the response from students at NLIU?.Aditi Verghese: We’ve been lucky in the response we’ve received from students both when we called for entries and when we released the magazine. Many students expressed their excitement at having a literary magazine at NLIU..Bar & Bench: Did you always start out with a web-based platform?.Aditi Verghese: Yes, Sauce has always been a web-based magazine. A web-based platform has proved more dynamic and interactive. Readers are able to make comments. The magazine is easily accessible. We reach a wider audience..Bar & Bench: Did you ever think of coming out with a print edition?.Aditi Verghese: We did put together a PDF version of the first issue of Sauce. We circulated it amongst NLIU students but we never released a print version. We might consider one in the future..Bar & Bench: You publish only non-legal content. Was that a conscious decision? .Aditi Verghese: Yes, it was. Sauce is a purely literary magazine. Our University already has legal journals. It was our intention to give the students of NLIU a platform to express themselves creatively..Bar & Bench: How do you see Sauce developing in the years to come?.Aditi Verghese: I hope to see Sauce continued; I really do believe it offers something special. I have no doubt that the future members of LitSoc will find new ways to reach more people and get more people involved. I see it developing in terms of content and format..Bar & Bench: Has your team thought of calling for submissions from other law schools as well?.Aditi Verghese: We have asked people from other colleges to write in the past. That is something we can focus on in the issues to come..Bar & Bench: Lastly, what has been your favourite submission that you have received thus far?.Aditi Verghese: The one that comes to mind is Revolutionising the Music Business by Aveek Chakravarty. It deals with innovative strategies used by certain bands to distribute music that I hadn’t heard about. Aveek is passionate about music himself and I think that shows in the article.
