In a turn of events that raises some serious questions, CLAT organizing university RMLNLU Lucknow has refused to to redress a recent allotment fiasco. And with a blame game ensuing, several students find themselves left in the lurch..As reported yesterday, a group of students domiciled in Madhya Pradesh was denied admission to NLIU Bhopal, despite locking their seats and paying the counselling fees after the first allotment..These students were then allotted seats in other NLUs via the second allotment list, after what the CLAT authorities described was an “advertent error” on their part. The reason given was that NLIU Bhopal had changed their state reservation policy. In effect, it was NLIU Bhopal that was responsible..When they met the Deputy Registrar of the CLAT office, this is what was told to them..“…It is also a fact that the NLIU Bhopal was taking “State Domicile” candidates through “Vertical” application of quota up to the last year i.e. this change has been made this year and that too after declaration of results….There is no way that the CLAT office at RMLNLU can help. The grievance has to be considered and addressed by the NLIU Bhopal which has changed the procedure after declaration of the result and allotment of Universities in the first round.”.However, NLIU Bhopal is claiming the very opposite..The students had already approached NLIU Bhopal, asking for an explanation of the events. In response, they were told that CLAT was being conducted by RMLNLU Lucknow and that NLIU did not have any information on this..NLIU Bhopal claims that,.“The intake for NLIU Bhopal for this year was clearly mentioned in the CLAT brochure, which was printed in January itself. The breakup of seats on the CLAT website is not an authentic document. .The second allotment has been done in accordance with the intake mentioned in the brochure. Therefore, it definitely a mistake on the part of the CLAT office.”.Though NLIU seem to have their bases covered, at this point, it is difficult to ascertain just where the blame lies. After all, the CLAT Committee does have representatives from every national law university..That there has been a deliberate cover-up though is crystal clear..Up until a couple of days ago, the breakup of seats on the CLAT website showed that there were 54 seats reserved for MP state domicile candidates..Very recently, the document was changed without any semblance of a notice..The students have now made a formal representation to the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court and the state government, seeking restoration of the first allotment..Meanwhile, the students find themselves being shunted back and forth, even as the two universities are looking to wash their hands clean of the incident.
