The Supreme Court of India is slated to examine whether the State Bank of India (SBI) should be given an extension of deadline for complying with a direction issued last month to disclose details of electoral bonds encashed by political parties since April 12, 2019.

The details were to be disclosed by March 6 to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The said direction was issued while striking down the electoral bonds scheme, which allowed anonymous political donations through the issue of bonds. This judgment was passed last month.

In the said judgment, the Court had ordered that the SBI should disclose details of electoral bonds by March 6 to the ECI and once the ECI is handed over these details, the details were to be made public on the ECI website by March 13.

However, SBI has sought time till June 30 to hand over the information to the ECI.

The bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra is also hearing a plea to initiate action against SBI for contempt of court since the bank failed to disclose details as per the deadline set by the Court.
