The Supreme Court's Justice DY Chandrachud said on Friday that he will request Chief Justice of India NV Ramana to explore the possibility of forming a tax bench at the apex court..This, Advocate V Lakshmikumaran, founding partner of tax law firm Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan, suggested that the constitution of a tax bench will go a long way in easing the pendency of tax cases before the top court. "It would do us good if a tax bench can be formed. My own office has about 600 matters pending since 2010," Lakshmikumaran said.He added that the backlog has only become worse in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant restricted functioning of the apex court."That's an excellent suggestion. I will mention it to the Hon'ble CJI today," Justice Chandrachud said.Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj also concurred with the suggestion..During the hearing, it was also pointed out how a tax bench of Justices AK Sikri and Rohinton Nariman constituted in 2015 had delivered over 800 judgments after its formation. This Bench, which sat during 2015-16, had met with favourable reviews from the Bar for the speed and quality of justice dispensation. It was later dissolved.
