Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi yet again expressed his displeasure at the exercise of mentioning cases for urgent hearing today..The Court had been sitting in a combination of a Constitution Bench for the past two days, which left no time for mentioning. Thus, a large number of lawyers lined up today before the Bench of CJI Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna to mention their matters..Miffed by the same, CJI Gogoi said,.“We have told you do not mention matters till it’s a case of life and death. Every day 500 cases are listed, where are the Judges (to hear so many cases)?”.When a lawyer pressed for being heard, CJI Gogoi warned,.“If you keep mentioning cases, we will rise for the day.”.The mentioning thus stopped, with the Bench moving on to call on listed cases for the day..In January this year, a miffed CJI Ranjan Gogoi reacted in a similar fashion to scores of lawyers lining up to mention matters. He had said,.“Everyday fifteen-twenty minutes are spent in mentioning… It cannot work like this.”.That same month, he had reiterated the need to do away with the practice of oral mentioning. He also stated that all mentioning should be made before the Registrar only..As soon as he had taken charge as Chief Justice, Gogoi J had made it clear that mentioning of matters in the Supreme Court will be on hold till parameters relating to the process are worked out..Bar & Bench is available on WhatsApp. For real-time updates on stories, Click here to subscribe to our WhatsApp.
