We have decided on action against Justice Karnan, says Chief Justice Thakur

After repeated requests for action against Justice Karnan by various Chief Justices of Madras, the Chief Justice of India, TS Thakur, seems to have finally decided on the next course of action..CJI Thakur gave a hint in this regard during the mentioning by Senior Advocate KK Venugopal. The senior counsel was mentioning a fresh application filed by the Madras High court in the case relating to the recruitment of civil judges and the controversy that followed it..The fresh application details two further incidents involving Justice Karnan..One pertains to an advocate, Peter Ramesh Kumar against whom the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had initiated contempt action for barging into the court and disrupting court proceedings. The case was transferred to the principal Bench when Justice Karnan chose to intervene. The judge wrote a letter to the Principal Secretary of the State seeking police protection for Kumar. He also said that this might held in Kumar getting an acquittal..The second incident pertains to the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy which is planning to open new centres in the State. Justice Karnan has alleged that he was removed from the Board of Governors of the Academy and that nobody from backward community has been invited to speak for the proposed function. He has written a letter to Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul accusing him of offences under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. He has also sent a copy of the same to the Registrar of the High Court directing him to register a suo – moto Petition based on the letter..The High Court has, however, stated in its application that Justice Karnan was never a part of the Board of Governors and that the dignitaries, who will be speaking at the function, include Supreme Court judges and two judges of the Madras High Court..When Senior Advocate KK Venugopal mentioned the matter yesterday for early hearing, Chief Justice Thakur said that,.“We have decided on [taking] action against him.”.Thakur J. then agreed to hear the new application filed by the High Court this Monday. Though the proposed steps against Justice Karnan remains unclear, a transfer to another High Court is the most likely scenario..Justice Karnan had shot into limelight when he had barged into a court room one day expressing his displeasure at the recommendations of the Collegium to elevate certain lawyers to the Bench. Later, he had made series of allegations against Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and has been constantly engaged in a tiff with his own High Court on the administrative side..It is understood that various Madras High Court Chief Justices had also written to the Chief Justice of India in the past, seeking action against Justice Karnan.
