DH Waghela J appointed as Chairman of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission

Former Chief Justice of the High Courts of Karnataka, Odisha and Bombay, Justice DH Waghela, has been appointed as Chairman of the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC)..Formed in 2005, the Commission has been functioning without a full-time head for over five years now. Former Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court Justice SR Nayak, who retired in 2012, was the last Chairman..Following Nayak J’s retirement, a move to appoint former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice D Murugesan as the KSHRC Chairman had been scuppered, after activists in the state opposed the appointment of a non-Kannadiga..However, they seem to have made an exception in Waghela J’s case. The Commission had become temporarily defunct following the resignation of acting Chairperson Meera Saxena in November last year..Justice Waghela was elevated as an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court in 1999, and was later made a permanent judge. In March 2013, he was transferred as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
