Dr Usha Tandon appointed first Vice-Chancellor of Dr Rajendra Prasad National Law University Prayagraj

Senior Professor Dr Usha Tandon has been appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of the recently established Dr Rajendra Prasad National Law University (NLU), Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh..Dr Tandon was previously a Senior Professor in the Faculty of Law at the Campus Law Centre, Delhi, where she taught environmental law, population law, gender justice and family law.Speaking to Bar & Bench on her new role as Vice-Chancellor of NLU Prayagraj, Professor Tandon said,"The objective of a law school is not solely to produce law graduates with degrees; it is also about preparing professionals capable of defending the Rule of Law and Constitutional Values, promoting social justice, and making a passionate contribution to nation-building."Professor Tandon has over 30 years of teaching experience and is recognised for her research in human development, with a particular emphasis on environmental protection and women's empowerment..She has also authored and edited several books on various aspects of the law relating to environmental protection and women's rights. Her published work includes those on Energy Law (Oxford University Press); Biodiversity Law (Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group); Climate Change (Eastern Book Company); Gender Justice (Regal Publications); and Human Trafficking Law (Central Law Agency).She has more than 50 research papers to her credit published in various international and national journals..The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet had granted approval for the establishment of the National Law University in Prayagraj on July 29, 2020.To this end, the 'Uttar Pradesh National Law University Prayagraj Act, 2020' was passed by the Uttar Pradesh Legislature in the same year.On December 3, 2021, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath declared that the NLU, located in Deoghat, Jhalwa in Prayagraj, would be named in honor of India's first President, Rajendra Prasad. The announcement was made as part of celebrations to mark the birth anniversary of Rajendra Prasad.
