UP Police lodges FIR after civil judge receives death threat

The Uttar Pradesh Police has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against unknown persons after a woman civil judge received a death threat via letter..The FIR is lodged under Sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 467 (forgery of valuable security) of the Indian Penal Code..According to the FIR registered at the Kotwali Nagar police station in Banda district, on March 28, the judge received the threatening letter from an unknown individual.The judge has also mentioned names of three individuals in the letter, stating that if the post office CCTV is footage is checked, then it will become clear by which person this envelope has been registered and the conspiracy will be exposed..In December last year, the same judge had addressed an open letter to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud requesting permission to end her life.In the letter, the judge alleged that she had been sexually harassed by a district judge and his associates. Despite complaints to the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court, no action was taken, she had claimed.Under the direction of CJI, a communication was sent from the Supreme Court to the Allahabad High Court seeking the present status of all the complaints filed by the woman judicial officer..The judge had also complained to the Internal Complaints Committee of the High Court, which took six months to start an inquiry. She later termed the inquiry a sham, claiming that the witnesses were immediate subordinates of the district judge she had made the allegations against.On December 13, 2023 she had moved the Supreme Court to seek a fair inquiry in the case. However, a Bench led by Justice Hrishikesh Roy had dismissed her plea.
