Truth has become victim of false news; people have become low on tolerance: CJI DY Chandrachud on flipside of technology

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Friday highlighted the flipside of technology, discussing that people have become low on tolerance and have retreated within, and that truth has become a victim of false news..The CJI was delivering a speech at the inaugural session of American Bar Association (ABA) International Law Section: ABA India Conference 2023 on the theme Law in the Age of Glocalisation: Convergence of India & the West.During his address, he discussed how judges are trolled by anyone who did not agree with them, and that people are also low on tolerance as they are not willing to accept views contrary to theirs."People are low on tolerance because they are not willing to accept your views. Humanity has also retreated within... Some of this is product of technology itself. Truth has become a victim of false news," he said.He added that when the Constitution of India was drafted, we did not know how human society would evolve."We did not have social media. We (judges) know that we are trolled by anyone who does not agree with us," he said..CJI Chandrachud discussed how something said as a seed germinates into a theory, which cannot be tested on the anvil of rational science..However, he also shed light on how technology had been transforming our lives, especially the lives of judges."Covid gave us little option. The then CJI told me we have to close our doors and now how do we grant bails etc. I told the CJI we have desktop computers and we can start video conferencing," he recalled.He added that video conferencing has led to decentralisation of justice and has become an important paradigm of access to justice."It has promoted equalization of justice. Supreme Court is the supreme court of smallest of villages, and not just Tilak Marg of Delhi.".Also speaking at the inaugural session, Solicitor General for India Tushar Mehta said that an event for glocalisation could not have been held at a better venue than India.
