The Indian Express and Times of India (TOI) on Friday published apologies in their Ahmedabad editions in compliance of an order of Gujarat High Court which recently censured them for wrongly reporting its observations in an ongoing case..The Court on Thursday had warned to issue contempt of court notice against the newspapers in case they failed to publish the apologies. The newspapers today published the apologies on their front pages. Both the papers said that their reporting had conveyed a wrong impression that High Court had decided the issues arising in the matter pertaining to the rights of aided minority institutions."The newspaper has the highest regard for the majesty of the High Court and we hereby tender our unconditional apology to the High Court and our esteemed readers for the error that has occurred in the reporting of the said report," the TOI said in its apology..A bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi had on August 13 issued notice to the regional editors of Times of India and Indian Express seeking their explanation for giving a "false and distorted narration" of court proceedings in the matter."The construction of the news item...appears that the court has formed an opinion about the right of a minority institution to appoint a teacher of its choice, while exercising right to regulate educational institutions run by minority institutes," Justice Agarwal had observed..On Thursday, the Court expressed dissatisfaction with the apologies tendered by the newspapers in their affidavits before the Court. The Court therefore directed the two media houses to publish apologies in their respective newspapers in a manner which reflects clearly that the the reporter and the editor were wrong in reporting the Court’s observations.
