Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi today stated in open court that fresh cases will be listed within four days of filing..The endeavour is to list fresh cases within four days of filing. If that does not happen, it will be positively listed on the fifth day, he said. Gogoi J. made this remark during the mentioning of cases today..Shortly after he took charge as Chief Justice of India, Gogoi J. made it clear that mentioning of matters in the Supreme Court will be on hold till parameters relating to the process are worked out..CJI Gogoi has, on multiple occasions, rebuked the Bar for making indiscriminate requests during mentioning for early listing of cases..On one occasion, when a matter was mentioned in October, Gogoi J said that the Court would take it up after the Dussehra vacation. When the lawyer persisted for an earlier date, the judge replied,.“Which part of what we said don’t you understand? Should I take consent of all lawyers and postpone the Dusherra vacation?”.Earlier this month, he once again expressed his anguish over a large number matters being mentioned for urgent listing..“Everyday fifteen-twenty minutes are spent in mentioning… It cannot work like this”.While responding to one of the advocates’ plea seeking urgent listing of a case, CJI Gogoi had said that often what is sought during mentioning is different from the prayers made in the written records..“I spend an hour every day to see if the matters that are mentioned can be accommodated in the list the next day. But often what is orally mentioned is not found in the written records later on. You tell us what is to be done!”
