As he bid farewell to the Supreme Court, Justice Vineet Saran on Tuesday used a reference from the Mahabharata, comparing the Bar to Lord Krishna and the Bench to Arjun..Justice Saran stressed on the importance of a good balance between the Bar and the Bench to maintain balance in the judiciary, and compared the two to the "two wheels of a chariot" which was used by Arjun, one of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata, whose charioteer was Lord Krishna. The judge emphasised that without proper assistance from the Bar on points of law, judges would not be able to write good judgments."It is always said that the Bar and Bench are two wheels of a chariot...The Bar is Lord Krishna and Arjun is the Bench. The role of members of the Bar is as important if not more than that of judges. Without proper assistance from the Bar, the judges cannot write good judgments. The quality of judgment depends on the quality of arguments," Justice Saran elucidated. .In his speech, Justice Saran spoke about court craft, and how it was important for lawyers to develop the same to ensure that their knowledge on the subject is communicated to the judge effectively. He also suggested that judges develop certain court craft to monitor their court's administration properly..Justice Saran was speaking at the farewell organised for him by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA). The farewell was held at the auditorium in the new Supreme Court complex, where Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and SCBA President Senior Advocate Vikas Singh were present..In his address at the event, CJI Ramana recounted asking Justice Saran about his future plans, in response to which the retiring judge said, 'No, I don’t want anything, I want to work freely, I want to be a free citizen.'He remarked that post retirement, Justice Saran will get the freedom to speak without any restrictions. "Retirement means he will get some freedom which he lost as a judge, which he will get again. After demitting office, he need not bother about the restrictions which the office had.
