The Central government has cleared the appointment of ten additional judges of Punjab and Haryana High Court as permanent judges. .A notification to this effect was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice on March 10. .The following are the additional judges who have been made permanent:- Justice Kuldeep Tiwari- Justice Gurbir Singh- Justice Deepak Gupta- Justice Amarjot Bhatti- Justice Ritu Tagore- Justice Manisha Batra- Justice Harpreet Kaur Jeewan- Justice Sukhvinder Kaur- Justice Sanjiv Berry; and- Justice Vikram Aggarwal..The Collegium of the High Court had recommended that the ten judges be made permanent on October 6, 2023..The Chief Ministers and the Governors of the States of Punjab and Haryana had not conveyed their views on the same, and the Union Department of Justice then forwarded the recommendation to the Supreme Court Collegium. Judges of the Supreme Court conversant with the affairs of the particular High Court were then consulted who concurred that all the judges are fit and suitable for confirmation as permanent judges.A two-judge committee assessed the judgments of the candidates and rated these “very good/good”.Subsequently, the Supreme Court Collegium examined all the material on record and on February 13 recommended the appointment of the ten judges as permanent judges of the High Court..As on March 1, 2024, the Punjab and Haryana High Court was functioning with 55 judges against a sanctioned strength of 85.
