The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain applications to allow the manufacture and sale of green crackers made using barium, as well as joined crackers..A bench of Justices AS Bopanna and MM Sundresh clarified that the 2018 order allowing only green crackers and low-emission crackers would continue."We have limited our consideration only to the optimisations regarding barium. For others, we have said earlier orders are there. We are not allowing the two applications, and others are kept pending," Justice Bopanna stated today while reading out the operative part of the order..The verdict was passed in a batch of interlocutory applications in a case concerning the ban on the sale, purchase and use of firecrackers in India. The Supreme Court had in October last year refused to impose a blanket ban on firecrackers in the country. In October 2021, the Supreme Court had directed all states and union territories to ensure that the ban on crackers made with barium are strictly complied with in their true spirit. It had been stressed that any lapse would result in personal liability being imposed on local authorities.
