The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea to declare smartha brahmins following Advaita philosophy as a separate religious denomination and to accord minority status to them..A bench of Justices Krishna Murari and S Ravindra Bhat rejected an appeal filed by Smartha Brahmins living in the State of Tamil Nadu against a Madras High Court judgment that had rejected their plea. The Court said that if the plea is allowed, "we will have a nation of minorities" since many people follow Advaita philosophy. .The Madras High Court had in June this year rejected the plea holding that there is no common organisation whatsoever by the name smartha brahmins or by any other name. "It is just a caste/ community without any peculiarity specifically attributable to them which distinguishes them from other brahmins of Tamil Nadu," the High Court had said. The appeal was filed through advocate Vinod Kumar Tewari.
