The Supreme Court on Friday refused to quash a corruption case against suspended Assam cop, Rounak Ali Hazarika [Rounak Ali Hazarika vs State of Assam]..A Bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan upheld a Gauhati High Court verdict in this regard and dismissed an appeal by the former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police..Hazarika is accused of possessing assets disproportionate to his known income. A complaint against him was initially filed in June 2021 before the Superintendent of Police, Chief Minister's Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Cell. The complainant claimed that Hazarika was a corrupt police officer who had accumulated properties worth crores of rupees.An inquiry was launched and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell found that Hazarika had amassed immovable and movable assets worth around 160 per cent more than his known sources of income.He was suspended from duty in July 2021 for going on several foreign trips without permission since 2011. He was arrested on October 5, 2021..The Assam Police submitted its final supplementary chargesheet against the police officer for offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act in 2022. He was also booked for offences under the Official Secrets Act. In October 2022, the Supreme Court granted him bail.In June this year, the Gauhati High Court rejected his plea to quash the criminal proceedings against him, after which he approached the Supreme Court for relief.
